Why Every 20-Something Needs Microdermabrasion
Let’s be honest- not only is this a transparent post for me, but I’ve never felt like one to talk about an honest skincare regime. Instead, my goal with this post is to help you address your own skin concerns. I deal, daily, with acne, blackheads, large pores, and oily skin. I’ve definitely had my go at what works and what doesn’t. After years of being concerned that my skin would never reach a healthy state, I researched an immense amount of products! Finally, I found an ideal skin care regime, that included my holy grail, microdermabrasion.
When I hit puberty, I literally freaked out and refused to listen to anyone about how to best take care of my skin. I dried my skin out constantly with “skin care” gimmicks for teens. Along the way, I built up a few regrets of not washing my skin at night and piling makeup on the next day. When I finally came around and realized my skin deserved more, I thought it was too late. But, FEAR NOT, I raided Sephora, Ulta and my local day spa came through for me!
Understanding Your Skin
Everyone’s skin is different, and that was something I failed to understand. It took research, trail and error and time, to really understand what reacted well to my skin. The key to better skin is routine. Being consistent with your skin makes a world of difference! You will notice how it begins to respond, and be able to go from there with products. I started with the basics: a good day moisturizer, nighttime cream, serum, pre-anti-aging products, face wash, at-home masks, and of course routine spa visits for a microdermabrasion treatment.
As a 20-something, it sounds crazy to throw in “pre-anti-aging products” but yes, in my opinion, you need those too. I’ve seen fine lines start creeping up on my forehead, around my eyes and my mouth. Our skin is changing with each year, whether we like it or not. It’s part environmental, genes and chemicals, but I figure I can start combating the signs early for less stress later.
Spa Visits & Microdermabrasion
So, let’s talk about those spa treatments I mentioned. Understandably it’s not feasible for everyone to partake in the regime I have done for almost 2 years now. Granted, in recent days I haven’t been as religious with my spa treatments, but honestly, my skin doesn’t need it as often as it did when I started this journey. I found a local spa that does daily specials, so I was able to save money! Once I visited a couple of times, I began to build a relationship with my esthetician. She has been a valuable asset to my skin, and has even become something of a friend along the way! After recommending microdermabrasion, I was eager to see the difference, and quickly became hooked!
Let’s look into an overview of microdermabrasion more, and some of what I’ve learned along the way!
Because of my monthly microdermabrasion treatments, my skin has evolved into what I wanted. Sure, I still have some scarring, the occasional breakout, and some blackheads, but my skin is nowhere near what it used to be. I became disciplined with taking care of my skin outside of those monthly treatments, too. I love my skincare hauls MORE than I love my makeup hauls (Wow! Never thought I’d say that!). I can’t wait to come home and clean my skin- honestly! I love makeup, but I love my skin more. Microdermabrasion worked on my behalf to shrink pores, control oil and a chain reaction started from that. After a microdermabrasion treatment, my skin is smooth, my makeup goes on better and my skin care products work better.
What is microdermabrasion?
The best way to describe microdermabrasion is it’s like light sandpaper rubbing gently over your face and neck. It’s a deep pore exfoliation that gently grinds away dirt, grime and products your average exfoliation can’t get to. This may sound painful, but your esthetician should offer up a comfort level. If they don’t, ask them too! It typically takes about 30 minutes, and then the rest of my facial after that. Or you can skip the full facial and just do a microdermabrasion treatment.
After a treatment, my skin is dewy, glowing and becoming healthier. After a month or so, I know when my skin needs another treatment. The top layer becomes more texturized and my skin beings to lose its glow. However, after a treatment, my skin gets better and better!
Why should you get microdermabrasion?
Even if you have wonderful skin, with no problems, or skin with minimal problems, you should still try microdermabrasion. Who doesn’t want their expensive skin cream to soak up better? You get the full results of products that you’re paying for, plus more benefits than you’ve ever dreamed of! The deep exfoliation is addictive because your skin begins to dramatically change. It’s worked wonders for my skin!
I also trust my esthetician and confide in her with my skin concerns. She makes me feel welcome to discuss my concerns and helps me understand how my skin is reacting month to month. Our skin can make us insecure, especially if it’s something we’ve struggled with for years. It’s a great feeling to know that I finally love my skin, for what it is. I know it’s being taken care, I understand it better, and I look forward to a spa day, too. Oh, and because my skin has cleared up, I rarely use acne spot treatments and expensive products that only dried my skin out. I switch up my regime all the time, use a lot of different masks (for fun), and really do my best to find products that will continue to improve my complexion.
As 20-somethings, our skin should be one less thing we worry about. Try microdermabrasion and begin to love the skin you’re in!
